Hypertension – The Silent Killer!

Sometimes what you don’t know can hurt you the most!
The first step toward change is awareness. The second step is acceptance.
-Nathaniel Branden
There are atleast 970 million people worldwide who have been living with High blood pressure (hypertension) as on date.

The World Health Organization-WHO rates hypertension as one of the most important causes of premature death worldwide as the problem is invariably increasing each day. Based on the current scenario & projections, the estimated adults living with high blood pressure by 2025 will be 1.56 billion. The disorder now is just not limited to old aged people of 50 years & above but even the younger generation has been found suffering through the same.

Factors influencing Hypertension:
The ideal blood pressure for people wishing to have good health is below 120 over 80 (120/80). Several factors which can be directly or inversely proportional hypertension are:
 Include age (blood pressure usually increases with age)
 Diet,
 Excessive alcohol consumption,
 Lack of exercise, obesity,
 Sleep apnea, stress and family history of hypertension.

What is Hypertension?

In Scientific terms, when the blood flows from the heart through the arteries, it creates pressure against the arteries walls. In case of hypertension, this pressure exceeds the normal range. The elevated blood pressure has very serious consequences as it damages the arteries, kidneys, and heart. Hypertension coupled with diabetes exponentially increases the damage if left un-controlled. Due to lack of appropriate knowledge 30% of those who suffer from this disorder don’t realize they have it which is all the more dangerous because it has no warning signs or symptoms and hence it is important for each one of us to not to ignore health related issues and take pro-active measures as it’s rightly said “Precaution is better than cure”

There usually are no symptoms of hypertension, which is why it’s been dubbed the silent killer. But if blood pressure climbs to extreme highs, one might experience a severe headache, chest pain, vision changes or a nosebleed or blood in urine. Hypertension can be best prevented by adjusting your lifestyle i.e. with proper diet and exercise. Though difficult but it is important to maintain a healthy weight, reduce salt intake, keep a tab on the alcohol consumption & adopt and practice stress free life.

Ashwagandha is easily the most potent aphrodisiac in the entire botanical kingdom.  It has the ability to restore sexual drive, increase endurance and improve overall vitality while promoting a calm state of mind.  ashwaghanda3Ashwagandha nourishes nerves and improves nerve function to help your body adapt to stress, one of the common cause of sexual problems.  Hormones (such as adrenaline) produced during high stress cause arteries to constrict, keeping blood from the extremities and negatively impacting sexual performance.  Ashwagandha brings the body back to equilibrium by relaxing it when stressed and energizing it when fatigued.  It also strengthens the reproductive and respiratory systems and enhances all aspects of mind power. It has been used for thousands of years to treat impotence, premature ejaculation, infertility, and erection disorders.
  2. Jaiphal(Nutmeg) is the dried kernel of the fruit of a tall and evergreen tree found in southern parts of India.  nutmegIt acts as an aphrodisiac by stimulating the central nervous system and warming the loins.  While increasing and maintaining sexual vigor, Jaiphal has a tranquilizing effect that helps to avert premature ejaculation.
  3. Shatavari is a rejuvenating herb that soothes the body to relieve stress, nurtures the reproductive system, and strengthens and nourishes tissues.  It supports the liver function and metabolic processes to remove toxins from the blood. shatavari This herb is also known to increase positivity and healing power.  When combined with Ashwagandha, Shatavari takes lovemaking capacity to new levels. Shatavari also helps reduce the pain and cramps during menstrual cycle in women.
  4. Gokshura is a sex and mood enhancer that stimulates the production of the Luteinizing Hormone (LH).  When LH levels are elevated, the natural production of testosterone also increases.  LH is a hormone that also increases sex drive and virility.  Laboratory studies have found that Gokshura increases sperm count after being taken for 30 days and can result in better than 50% increase in testosterone levels.  gokshura2This herb also has a stimulating effect on the liver by helping to convert cholesterol and fats into hormones and energy.  Gokshura has a tremendous positive impact on strength and stamina.
  5. Kapikachu Seeds have been traditionally known to be as one of the best herbal tonic and aphrodisiacs to the reproductive system of both the sexes. When used in combination with Ashwagandha, Shatavari, Gokshura to make various pills and herbal jellies, they tend to show wondrous effects on the consumers. One teaspoon of Kapikachu seeds boiled in one cup of water stimulates sexual energy and prevents premature ejaculation, something that most men would have often faced at least once during their many encounters.

This goes well with the Ayurvedic application of Mushali as a rejuvenator of sexual desire

Don’t let Diabetes get the best of you

Diabetes remediesNow that Diwali is almost winding to a close and presumably there have been sufficient indulgence in all things sweet, delicious and heavenly, it is time to introduce a little awareness about health, don’t you think?

Diabetes Mellitus or as it is commonly referred to as, Diabetes, is a medical condition where the sugar (glucose) level in the blood becomes higher than normal. As many would already be aware, there are two main types of Diabetes – Type 1 and Type 2.

Type 1 diabetes usually has an early onset, considered juvenile and insulin-dependent. In this case, the beta cells in the pancreas stop making insulin which causes a dip in the level of insulin in the bloodstream; the symptoms of illness are visible within weeks.

In type 2 diabetes, insulin is still produced unlike in type 1 diabetes and the symptoms take time to show up. There are however three reasons to develop diabetes-

  1. There’s not enough insulin for body’s needs.
  2. The cells in the body are not able to use the insulin to its potential (insulin resistance). Hence, it necessitates an additional boost of insulin to bring up the level of insulin to normal.
  3. Combination of 1 & 2.

Although type 2 diabetes is a more common occurrence in those aged above 40, it is increasingly becoming more common in children and young adults. Primarily a lifestyle related ailment, the symptoms for type 2 diabetes may take a while to appear in fully. In most cases, a patient suffering from type 2 diabetes would ideally not be aware of the onset till diagnosis happens much later. Some common symptoms that one should keep an eye out for, are as under:

–          Increased thirst

–          Fatigue and weight loss

–          Blurry vision

–          Increased appetite

–          Excess urination

Excess urination and increased thirst is attributed to glucose that leaks into urine, which pulls out extra water through the kidneys.

An important point to bear in mind is with patients who don’t have a high level of blood sugar (glucose), tend to seldom show the above mentioned symptoms.

It is important to have an understanding of the short and long term complications of diabetes, chiefly because without the same, it’d be hard to administer a proper treatment.

According to , ‘If your blood glucose level is higher than normal over a long period of time, it can gradually damage your blood vessels. This can occur even if the glucose level is not very high above the normal level.’ This may lead to some of the following complications:

  • Furring or hardening of the arteries (atheroma). This can cause problems such as angina, heart attacks, stroke and poor circulation
  • Kidney damage which sometimes develops into kidney failure.
  • Eye problems which can affect vision (due to damage to the small arteries of the retina at the back of the eye).
  • Nerve damage
  • Foot problems (due to poor circulation and nerve damage)
  • Impotence (again due to poor circulation and nerve damage)

Although a permanent cure for diabetes is not yet definitively found, there are these certain natural remedies that can assist in keeping damage at bay. One of the biggest cues is adopting a healthier eating pattern and changes in the existing lifestyle habits.

Mentioned below are some of the natural remedies to battle diabetes:

  1. Fig Leaves: Besides being used in the treatment of bronchitis, genital warts, skin problems and ulcers, fig leaves extract have excellent anti-diabetic properties. Taking the extract with breakfast first thing in the morning reduces the need for insulin supplement. An additional remedy is to boil the leaves of the fig in some freshly filtered water and drink this as a tea.
  2. Jamun and Neem:  Daily intake of jamun fruit/jamun extracts offers a natural and safe way to prevent the onset of diabetes. Also, oral administration of jamun extract boosts insulin levels in people affected by diabetes.
  3. Stevia: Stevia is the healthiest natural sugar substitute, and the most trusted natural sweet plants on Earth. It has been used as a healthy alternative to sugar for people seeking over all improved health by controlling blood sugar
  4. Cinnamon: has long been regarded as a decent source for treatment of diabetes. In a survey conducted in 2003 by Khan and associates, the results indicated that the glucose level in blood dropped 18 percent; LDL cholesterol and triglycerides also showed reduced levels. According to Cancer, ‘Cinnamon mimics insulin, thus it may lower the need for insulin immediately.’
  5. Grape Seed Extracts: Although not directly related, grape seed extracts have been proven to be successful in preserving liver cells and setting up defense mechanisms against reactive oxygen species produced by hyperglycemic (high blood sugar level) conditions.
  6. Olive Oil: Olive oil rich diets may go a long way in preventing diabetes. Regular intake of the same can reduce blood levels including LDL and triglycerides. The property of olive oil being monosaturated instead of saturated fat, keeps diseases such as cardiovascular, atherosclerosis, and diabetes under check.
  7. Bitter Melon: For containing properties that imitate insulin, regular intake of bitter melon comes highly recommended as it helps lower blood and urine levels. The bitter melon should be juiced and then taken on an empty stomach before eating first thing in the morning. The seeds may be ground to a powder and eaten also.
