Many people think about “organic” as meaning “earth friendly.” Even though this meaning often holds true, it doesn’t always. Organic regulations focus on farming practices and food production steps that can be monitored and controlled to decrease risk of food contamination and improve food quality.

organic farming

WHAT IS ORGANIC FARMING?

Organic products are grown under a system of agriculture without the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides with an environmentally and socially responsible approach.  India is bestowed with lot of potential to produce all varieties of organic products due to its various agro climatic regions. In many parts of the country, the congenital tradition of organic farming is an added advantage for the organic producers to tap the market.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ORGANIC & CONVENTIONAL FOOD?

The (only) difference between organic and conventional food is how the food has been produced and processed. For instance, the use of fertilizers and pesticides is restricted in organic production.
Organic food is therefore defined as the product of a farming system, which avoids the use of man-made fertilizers, pesticides, growth regulators and livestock feed additives.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF ORGANIC FOODS

While most people turn to organic food for reasons relating to health, there are many other reasons people should appreciate and support organic farming. Let us understand the health benefits of organic foods:

Better Taste: Organic food tastes delicious and it makes sense why it does – healthy soil and plants make food that tastes the best. Furthermore, organic food is often sold locally, resulting in availability of fresh produce in the market, which usually does taste better than produce that has been frozen, shipped, and transported across long distances.

Pesticide Reduction: Organic food contributes to better health through reduced pesticide exposure for all and increased nutritional quality. Organic food can feed us and keep us healthy without producing the toxic effects of chemical agriculture. To be fair, many people do choose to go organic to make sure that their children grow up healthy and unaffected by the toxins of the world during their developmental years.

Immune System: In animal testing, genetically modified food showed a major reduction in immune system strength, an increase in birth mortality, as well as in certain cancers, and sensitivity to allergens. Although there are some good things about genetically modified food, organic food advocates point to the lack of concrete details about the long-term effects.

Fresh Produce:  Fresh food tastes better. Organic food is usually fresher because it does not contain preservatives that make it last longer. Organic produce is often (but not always, so watch where it is from) produced on smaller farms near where it is sold.

Environmental Safety: Organic farmers focus a lot of their time and energy in farming in the way that best respects the land. They understand that the soil is basically the foundation of farming and hence they are involved in programs to conserve and restore the soil. As harmful chemicals are not used in organic farming, there is minimal soil, air and water pollution; thus ensuring a safer and healthier world for future generations to live in.
