BENEFITS OF MASSAGE DURING WINTER

Now that it is winter, your body needs some extra love. With the cold and chilly weather outside, if you tend to stay indoors more and fight the chills sipping a hot beverage, consider adding a soothing massage to your winter regimen. Perhaps you don’t think massage is for you and that it won’t be helpful enough in keeping yourself warm or maybe it’s just a luxury. Well, It’s more than a luxury. Here are some of the benefits of treating yourself with a massage which will not only keep your body toned and healthy but will also give it a tremendous boost during this chilly season.

  1. Helps in circulation

The results of massage are more than just outer beauty. Especially during winter season, when circulation and metabolism may be slower, massaging your body can help enhancing the blood flow thereby naturally improving the body function. Increased blood circulation means that you’re less likely to feel cold during the winter.

  1. Dry skin

Our skin becomes dry and flaky during winter. Massaging your body with appropriate oils will help to moisturise the skin. It will not only add moisture but will also exfoliate removing the dead skin. So, indulge yourself in relaxing massages throughout the winter to keep your skin nourished and healthy.

  1. Reduces seasonal aches and pain

The arrival of winter can be tormenting for those with chronic body pain. Cold temperatures may cause the muscles to contract and tighten. Massaging relaxes the rigid muscles promoting a sense of pleasure and comfort to your body.

  1. Boosts your immunity

Massage therapy helps to boost your immune system and fight of viruses by increasing the activity level of the body’s natural “killer T cells.” Adding a massage therapy to your daily routine can give your immune system the additional care and support it requires to stay fit during the winter season.

Say No Beauty Products With Chemicals

Say No Beauty Products With Chemicals

In a world ravaged with pollution and environmental factor damaging your skin, it’s hard to stay beautiful, retain clear skin without sans beauty enhancing products

The use of beauty products has come to full circle. In olden days people were using natural beauty products then we shifted to chemicals and now we are heading back to Mother Nature.

Say No Beauty Products With Chemicals

Here is a list of The Dirty Dozen ingredients that should be avoided:

1. Phthalates : ‘Dibutyl Phthalate

What is it? : Phthalates can be easily absorbed by our skin.  It enhances the capacity of other chemicals to cause genetic mutations.

Why is it harmful? : It has been shown to cause developmental defects and is toxic to reproductionand can also harm the unborn and impair fertility.

2. Sulphates or Sodium Laurate(or Lauryl) Sulphate (SLS)

What is it? : Primarily used as a foaming agent or detergent to be found in shampoos, facial cleansers, bubble bath products, household and utensil cleaning detergents.

Why is it harmful? : Depending on the manufacturing process it can work as a possible human carcinogen and can even harm the nervous system.

3. Paraben

What is it? : Primarily used as a preservative, they are used as fragrance ingredients, not listed in your favorite perfume label.  Perfume recipes are considered trade secrets; hence the manufacturers are not obliged to disclose the ingredients. An estimated 75-90% of cosmetics contain this toxin.

Why is it harmful? : Parabens are easily absorbed by our skin. Parabens can mimic estrogen and has been detected in human breast cancer tissues. It is estimated that women are exposed to 50mg of parabens per day.

4. Formaldehyde

What is it? :  These are primarily preservatives commonly found in cosmetics.

Look for: DMDM hydantoin, diazolidinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea, methenamine, quaternium-15, and sodium hydroxymethylglycinate. These ingredients slowly and continuously release small amounts of formaldehyde.

Why is it harmful? : Formaldehyde has a very sharp odor.  It is also blamed for allergic reactions in sensitive people.

5. BHA and BHT

What is it? : BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) and BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) are synthetic antioxidants used as preservatives in lipsticks and moisturizers and are also used as food preservatives.

Why is it harmful? : They can cause allergic reactions, liver, thyroid and kidney problems along with lung function impairment and problems in blood coagulation. Moreover, they mimic estrogen and can have an adverse impact on reproduction.

6. Coal-Tar dyes

What is it? : Coal tar-derived colorants are used extensively in cosmetics. P-phenylenediamine is used frequently hair dyes.  These dyes are generally identified by a five-digit Colour Index (C.I.) number.
Why is it harmful? : Coal tar is a carcinogen and dyes made from it have a high potential for causing cancer. These colours are sometimes contaminated with aluminium substrate which is toxic to the brain.

7. DEA compounds

What is it? : DEA (diethanolamine) and its compounds are used in moisturizers and sunscreens, while cocamide and lauramide DEA are found in soaps, cleansers, and shampoos to create more lather.

Why is it harmful? : These cause mild skin and eye irritation. Exposure to high doses of these chemicals has caused liver cancers and pre-cancerous changes in skin and thyroid in a few cases.

8. Fragrance/Parfum

What is it? : Apart from being used in perfumes and deodorants, they are used in nearly every type of personal-care product. Of the thousands of chemicals used in fragrances, most have not been tested for toxicity, alone or in combination. Over 3000 chemicals are used to manufacture synthetic fragrances.

Why is it harmful? : These are often unlisted ingredients that are irritants and can trigger allergies, migraines, andasthma symptoms and lead to asthma in children.

9. PEG compounds

What is it? : PEGs (polyethylene glycols) are widely used in cosmetics as thickeners, solvents, softeners, and moisture-carriers and hence used for products requiring a cream base and also in laxatives.

Why is it harmful? : Ethylene oxide is a human carcinogen while 1, 4-dioxane – a possible human carcinogen. Ethylene oxide harms the nervous system and causes developmental problems. They are also known to cause skin irritation and systemic toxicity.

10. Petrolatum

What is it? : Mineral oil jelly or petroleum jelly is used as a moisturizer and in hair-shine products.

Why is it harmful? : Petrolatum can be contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Exposure to PAHs is associated with cancer and skin irritation and allergies.

11. Siloxanes

What is it? : Cyclomethicone and ingredients ending in “siloxane” make hair products dry quickly and deodorant creams slide on easily.  They are also used extensively in moisturisers and facial treatments to soften and smoothen and in medical implants.

Why is it harmful? : Cyclotetrasiloxane and Cylcopentasiloxane —D4 and D5 — are endocrine disruptors, interfere with human hormone function and possible reproductive toxicants that may impair human fertility, cause uterine tumours and harm the reproductive and immune systems.

12. Triclosan

What is it? : Triclosan is used mainly in antiperspirants/deodorants, cleansers, and hand sanitizers as a preservative and an anti-bacterial agent. Also used in laundry detergent, facial tissues, and antiseptics for wounds.

Why is it harmful? : It can pass through skin and is suspected of interfering with hormone function (endocrine disruption). Extensive use may contribute to antibiotic-resistant bacteria. It can cause irritation to the skin and eyes.

The Anti-Cancer Diet: Foods to Fight Cancer

To reduce your risk of cancer, look no further than your fridge. One of the easiest things for a person touched by cancer to address is their diet. Our view is that diet is most helpful in fighting cancer.

Many cancer survivors have been fortunate enough to use a combination of natural cancer treatments themselves at home, in conjunction with conventional medical treatments, in order to overcome their disease. This duel approach can help support the entire body and mind in the healing process that can sometimes be long and very difficult. Today, the early combination of chemotherapy and nutrition therapy is able to save the lives of thousands of cancer patients.

Inflammation is the underlying issue that dictates cancerous tumor initiation, progression and growth. Studies suggest that 30 percent to 40 percent of all kinds of cancer can be prevented with a healthy lifestyle and dietary measures! And other sources claim that this number is in fact much higher, with around 75 percent of cancer cases being lifestyle-related.

Practicing strategies that are fully within your own control — including things like eating a healing diet, vegetable juicing, consuming probiotic foods, taking immune-boosting supplements, busting stress and practicing healing prayer — can make you feel more empowered and hopeful when battling a disease, which goes a very long way in the healing process.

Aim for five to nine daily servings of all kinds of fruits and vegetables—especially these six superstars:

  • Broccoli: Helps fight against breast, liver, lung, prostate, skin, stomach, and bladder cancers

  • Berries: Helps fight against colon, esophageal, oral, and skin cancers

  • Tomatoes: Helps fight against endometrial, lung, prostate, and stomach cancers

  • Walnuts: Helps fight against breast and prostate cancers

  • Garlic: Helps fight against breast, colon, esophageal, and stomach cancers

  • Beans: Helps fight against breast and colon cancers

While researchers are still trying to determine which foods have the most cancer- preventing benefits, we do know what not to eat if you want to protect yourself.

What not to eat: Animal fats like Meat, cheese, and butter can be rich in saturated fat, which has been linked to obesity—a big cancer predictor. Opt for leaner protein sources, such as fish, low-fat dairy, and those good-for-you beans.

What not to drink: Excessive alcohol: Stop after one drink! Too much tippling is associated with an increased risk of cancers of the mouth, esophagus, and breast.

An anti-cancer diet is an important strategy you can use to reduce your risk of cancer.  Make room in your diet for these foods & drinks to fight cancer. Shop here for some of the beneficial cancer fighting foods:

SOS Organics Himalayan Village Brown Rice: Known for its powerful detoxifying and anti-cancer benefits

Deccan Organic Turmeric Powder: Curcumin may help prevent cancer

24 Letter Mantra Masoor Dal: Helps combat metabolic syndrome

Conscious Food Chick Peas (Kabuli Chana): Good source of insoluble fiber, folate, and vitamin B6

Vedic Delite Natural Flax Seeds: Flax seed benefits include fighting breast, prostate, ovarian and colon cancer, this benefit has been proven time and time again.

Remember that ‘good nourishment’ is a crucial weapon in the fight against cancer and any illness. Good cancer nutrition can be vital in increasing your personal odds of survival.

The oils that are extracted from almonds are packed with moisturizing properties, vitamins, and rich acids that make it perfect for our skin. After learning this, we knew we had to share all of its beauty secrets with you.

Our favorite part of almond oil is its moisturizing properties. It makes for the best body, hand, face, and hair moisturizers, plus it’s an awesome part of those facial oils we love so much. It’s extremely gentle, making if perfect for highly sensitive skin and it works to calm allergic reactions. Plus, almond oil can also brighten skin and help fight aging lines, both of which make for a daily moisturizer we can get behind.

If you’re still not convinced, know almond oil can work for your hair, too. Just a few drops of almond oil, and you’ll start seeing shiny, healthy strands.

Almond oil comes in two variants; bitter and sweet. The bitter almond oil is extracted from the bitter almonds that contain a glycoside called amygdalin which turns into toxic hydrocyanic acid on processing. Most almond trees growing in the wild produce bitter almonds that have varying degrees of this glycoside. They can have fatal consequences if ingested. Bitter almond oil does have some medicinal properties, and may be pretty safe for external application, but is better avoided due to the high risk of poisoning.

The sweet almond oil that comes exclusively from edible almonds (Prunus amygdalus var. dulcis) selectively cultivated for their sweet taste. It is the oil popularly used for skin and hair care. It has many culinary uses too. Let’s see how we can use this wonderful gift of nature to enhance our health and beauty.

The many benefits of Almond Oil:

The Health And Beauty Benefits Of A Body Scrub!

When we hop in the shower, most of us have a variety of hair and skin care products lined up along the ledge—everything from moisturizing shampoos to soothing shaving creams. But among all of those options, do you have a good body scrub? An essential for maintaining healthy, smooth skin, body scrubs are a must-have on your shower menu. The combination of cleansing, exfoliation and massage provides benefits that go beyond what a bar of soap can do.

Most of us who try to take good care of our skin remember to exfoliate our faces, but what about our bodies?

Exfoliating helps your skin look smoother and more youthful. But it’s not only the face that needs the benefits. You probably exfoliate your face regularly to get rid of buildup and have a fresh, glowing appearance. You can get the same benefits for the body when you exfoliate the rest of your skin.

You may wonder: is it really necessary?

Turns out that your body needs exfoliating just as much as your face. Without regular exfoliation, you can end up with clogged pores, which block moisture from getting into the deeper layers, and creating a hard, unattractive exterior. So to have the healthiest and smoothest skin possible, exfoliating is key.

Now the question is how to exfoliate? And we have the answer: Body Scrub!

Benefits of using a Body Scrub:

If you’re not using a body scrub then you’re missing out on a number of benefits that other skin care products don’t provide.

Body Scrub Benefit # 1 – Makes Skin Look Fresh And Rejuvenated

Essentially the benefits of using a body scrub are the removal of dead skin cells from the body and impurities, leaving you feeling fresh and your skin looking rejuvenated and revitalized.

Body Scrub Benefits # 2 – Makes Skin Look More Youthful

Exfoliating dead skin cells tends to remove the dull and lacklustre appearance of the skin. Using a body scrub regularly will help make your skin look more vibrant and youthful.

Did You Know:

Humans shed skin cells daily (anywhere from 11,000-23,000 skin cells an hour) and it usually takes about 27 to 30 days before new skin cells reach the top layer of the skin (stratum corneum).

Body Scrub Benefits # 3 – Moisturizing Benefits

Benefits of body scrubs through the removal of dead skin cells as a result of exfoliation with a mild body scrub extend to moisturizing as it allows for the easy absorption of a skin moisturizer into the healthy skin. Ideally, the best body scrub is one that not only acts as a gentle exfoliant but moisturizes at the same time!

Body Scrub Benefits # 4: Improved Self Tanning

More and more people are using self tanners rather than increase their risk of skin cancer through exposure to the damaging effects of too much sun. The important thing to know here is that to achieve a realistic “fake” tan using a self tanner is to exfoliate with a gentle body scrub first. If you don’t do this to remove any dead skin cells then you run the risk of ending up with a blotchy look as the self tanner will darken areas where more dead skin cells accumulate (such as the elbows and knees). If you want a natural looking tan and you use a self tanner then using a suitable body scrub before applying the tanning product is essential.

How to Use a Body Scrub

If your skin is healthy and firm, you can use a shower scrub up to three times a week. But if you have sensitive or thin skin, limit a good buffing to once a week.
Hold off on running the water in the shower and spend a few minutes using your hands or scrubbing tool to rub your scrub in circular motions onto dry skin for full and longer-lasting coverage. Turn on the water and rinse, using your hands to help remove any remaining granules. If you’re short on time, massage the scrub all over your body and rinse during your normal shower routine.

Be careful not to over scrub. Though your body skin is heartier than the skin on your face, it is susceptible to irritation. Always moisturize after you’ve dried off for smooth, nourished skin.

How to Get the Best Results Of A Body Scrub

Not all body scrubs are good for you or the environment. Some body scrubs contain harmful chemicals and even use small plastic beads as the exfoliating agent. You want a natural body scrub that won’t harm you and that is eco- friendly. Body scrubs are washed off, go down the drain and end up in the environment so be conscious of the footprint you leave behind!

For this purpose it is necessary that you use an organic body scrub. Wondering how & where to find it? Here we have a wide range of organic body scrubs that you can purchase online in India.

Buy organic body scrubs online here:

Puro Chocolate Vanilla Body Scrub: This deliciously fragrant body scrub is designed to gently exfoliate and remove dead surface skin cells while revealing soft, smooth and radiant skin without drying.

Try this homemade scrub:

¼ cup olive oil
½ cup white or brown sugar
½ cup ground oatmeal (or coffee grounds for a more invigorating scrub)
1-3 drops essential oil (try lavender, almond, citrus or peppermint oils)

Whisk together all ingredients and pour into a mason jar or other airtight container. Use just a quarter-sized amount at a time, storing the scrub in a dry place for up to three weeks.

Quinoa: The Supergrain Of The Future

Tiny, bead-shaped, with a slightly bitter flavour and firm texture, quinoa may not be a household name just yet, but it is set for a starry future – as far as grains go. The Incas have known it all along, for thousands of years regarding it as the ‘mother grain’ as they grew it high up in the Andes.

Unlike wheat or rice, quinoa is a complete protein – containing all eight of the essential amino acids. It has been recognised by the United Nations as a supercrop for its health benefits: packed with dietary fibre, phosphorus, magnesium and iron. It is also gluten-free and easy to digest. The facts suggest it is close to a perfect ingredient as you can get.

Health Benefits of Quinoa:

Quinoa dates back three to four thousand years ago when the Incas first realized that the quinoa seed was fit for human consumption.
Who would not want to reap the benefits of this amazing superfood?

Here are seven health benefits of quinoa:

  1. Quinoa is one of the most protein-rich foods we can eat. It is a complete protein containing all nine essential amino acids.
  2. Quinoa contains almost twice as much fiber as most other grains. Fiber is most widely known to relieve constipation. It also helps to prevent heart disease by reducing high blood pressure and diabetes. Fiber lowers cholesterol and glucose levels, may lower your risk of developing hemorrhoids and may help you to lose weight as it takes a longer time to chew than does other foods because it makes you feel fuller for longer and is less “energy dense” which means it has fewer calories for the same volume of food.

  3. Quinoa contains Iron. Iron helps keep our red blood cells healthy and is the basis of hemoglobin formation. Iron carries oxygen from one cell to another and supplies oxygen to our muscles to aid in their contraction. Iron also increases brain function because the brain takes in about 20% of our blood oxygen. There are many benefits of iron some more of which include neurotransmitter synthesis, regulation of body temperature, aids enzyme activity and energy metabolism.

  4. Quinoa contains lysine. Lysine is mainly essential for tissue growth and repair.

  5. Quinoa is rich in magnesium. Magnesium helps to relax blood vessels and thereby to alleviate migraines. Magnesium also may reduce Type 2 diabetes by promoting healthy blood sugar control. Other health benefits of magnesium include transmission of nerve impulses, body temperature regulation, detoxification, energy production, and the formation of healthy bones and teeth.

  6. Quinoa is high in Riboflavin (B2). B2 improves energy metabolism within brain and muscle cells and is known to help create proper energy production in cells.

  7. Quinoa has a high content of manganese. Manganese is an antioxidant, which helps to prevent damage of mitochondria during energy production as well as to protect red blood cells and other cells from injury by free radicals.

Colour coded

Quinoa comes in three different colours – white, red and black. White is most widely available, and also the quickest to cook. Black takes the longest to cook and keeps more of its crunchy texture. Red is somewhere in the middle. Recommended, a blend of all three, if it is available, so you get some texture from the black, but it’s not too crunchy.

Spice trail

Quinoa works brilliantly with Middle Eastern and Indian spices such as cumin, coriander and paprika. For easy flavouring, add a pinch while the quinoa is cooking.

Even better is cooking the quinoa in a similar way to a pilaf, frying onion, garlic, ginger and chilli with the spices first, stirring the grain through the oil for 30 seconds and then adding water or even stock.

For a salad, the quinoa can be dressed after it is cooked.

It’s one of those versatile things where you can make it Moroccan, Mexican, or Indian. It goes really well with cumin, coriander, paprika, cinnamon. Or Mediterranean flavours like feta, olive oil, lemon, parsley and mint.

Wondering where you can find Quinoa in India? You might not very easily get it in the market. But you can easily shop for Quinoa online in India!
