1. Phthalates : ‘Dibutyl Phthalate

 What is it? : Phthalates can be easily absorbed by our skin.  It enhances the capacity of other chemicals to cause genetic mutations.

Why is it harmful? : It has been shown to cause developmental defects and is toxic to reproductionand can also harm the unborn and impair fertility.

2. Sulphates or Sodium Laurate(or Lauryl) Sulphate (SLS) 

What is it? : Primarily used as a foaming agent or detergent to be found in shampoos, facial cleansers, bubble bath products, household and utensil cleaning detergents.

Why is it harmful? : Depending on the manufacturing process it can work as a possible human carcinogen and can even harm the nervous system.

3. Paraben 

What is it? : Primarily used as a preservative, they are used as fragrance ingredients, not listed in your favorite perfume label.  Perfume recipes are considered trade secrets; hence the manufacturers are not obliged to disclose the ingredients. An estimated 75-90% of cosmetics contain this toxin.

Why is it harmful? : Parabens are easily absorbed by our skin. Parabens can mimic estrogen and has been detected in human breast cancer tissues. It is estimated that women are exposed to 50mg of parabens per day.

4. Formaldehyde 

What is it? :  These are primarily preservatives commonly found in cosmetics.

Look for: DMDM hydantoin, diazolidinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea, methenamine, quaternium-15, and sodium hydroxymethylglycinate. These ingredients slowly and continuously release small amounts of formaldehyde.

Why is it harmful? : Formaldehyde has a very sharp odor.  It is also blamed for allergic reactions in sensitive people.

5. BHA and BHT

What is it? : BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) and BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) are synthetic antioxidants used as preservatives in lipsticks and moisturizers and are also used as food preservatives.

Why is it harmful? : They can cause allergic reactions, liver, thyroid and kidney problems along with lung function impairment and problems in blood coagulation. Moreover, they mimic estrogen and can have an adverse impact on reproduction.

6. Coal-Tar dyes

What is it? : Coal tar-derived colorants are used extensively in cosmetics. P-phenylenediamine is used frequently hair dyes.  These dyes are generally identified by a five-digit Colour Index (C.I.) number.
Why is it harmful? : Coal tar is a carcinogen and dyes made from it have a high potential for causing cancer. These colours are sometimes contaminated with aluminium substrate which is toxic to the brain.

7. DEA compounds

What is it? : DEA (diethanolamine) and its compounds are used in moisturizers and sunscreens, while cocamide and lauramide DEA are found in soaps, cleansers, and shampoos to create more lather.

Why is it harmful? : These cause mild skin and eye irritation. Exposure to high doses of these chemicals has caused liver cancers and pre-cancerous changes in skin and thyroid in a few cases.

8. Fragrance/Parfum

What is it? : Apart from being used in perfumes and deodorants, they are used in nearly every type of personal-care product. Of the thousands of chemicals used in fragrances, most have not been tested for toxicity, alone or in combination. Over 3000 chemicals are used to manufacture synthetic fragrances.

Why is it harmful? : These are often unlisted ingredients that are irritants and can trigger allergies, migraines, andasthma symptoms and lead to asthma in children.

 

9. PEG compounds

What is it? : PEGs (polyethylene glycols) are widely used in cosmetics as thickeners, solvents, softeners, and moisture-carriers and hence used for products requiring a cream base and also in laxatives.

Why is it harmful? : Ethylene oxide is a human carcinogen while 1, 4-dioxane – a possible human carcinogen. Ethylene oxide harms the nervous system and causes developmental problems. They are also known to cause skin irritation and systemic toxicity.

10. Petrolatum

What is it? : Mineral oil jelly or petroleum jelly is used as a moisturizer and in hair-shine products.

Why is it harmful? : Petrolatum can be contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Exposure to PAHs is associated with cancer and skin irritation and allergies.

11. Siloxanes

What is it? : Cyclomethicone and ingredients ending in “siloxane” make hair products dry quickly and deodorant creams slide on easily.  They are also used extensively in moisturisers and facial treatments to soften and smoothen and in medical implants.

Why is it harmful? : Cyclotetrasiloxane and Cylcopentasiloxane —D4 and D5 — are endocrine disruptors, interfere with human hormone function and possible reproductive toxicants that may impair human fertility, cause uterine tumours and harm the reproductive and immune systems.

12. Triclosan

What is it? : Triclosan is used mainly in antiperspirants/deodorants, cleansers, and hand sanitizers as a preservative and an anti-bacterial agent. Also used in laundry detergent, facial tissues, and antiseptics for wounds.

Why is it harmful? : It can pass through skin and is suspected of interfering with hormone function (endocrine disruption). Extensive use may contribute to antibiotic-resistant bacteria. It can cause irritation to the skin and eyes.

Unlike wheat or rice, quinoa is a complete protein – containing all eight of the essential amino acids. It has been recognised by the United Nations as a supercrop for its health benefits: packed with dietary fibre, phosphorus, magnesium and iron. It is also gluten-free and easy to digest. Health Benefits of Quinoa:

Quinoa dates back three to four thousand years ago when the Incas first realized that the quinoa seed was fit for human consumption.

  7. Quinoa has a high content of manganese. Manganese is an antioxidant, which helps to prevent damage of mitochondria during energy production as well as to protect red blood cells and other cells from injury by free radicals.

Quinoa comes in three different colours – white, red and black. White is most widely available, and also the quickest to cook. Black takes the longest to cook and keeps more of its crunchy texture. Red is somewhere in the middle. Recommended, a blend of all three, if it is available, so you get some texture from the black, but it’s not too crunchy.

Spice trail

Quinoa works brilliantly with Middle Eastern and Indian spices such as cumin, coriander and paprika. For easy flavouring, add a pinch while the quinoa is cooking.

Even better is cooking the quinoa in a similar way to a pilaf, frying onion, garlic, ginger and chilli with the spices first, stirring the grain through the oil for 30 seconds and then adding water or even stock.

For a salad, the quinoa can be dressed after it is cooked.

1 cup uncooked quinoa
1 tsp organic canola or safflower oil
½ tsp mustard seeds
½ tsp urad dal (split black gram) or use mung dal (petite yellow lentils)
1 green chili chopped, remove seeds to adjust spice if needed
a generous pinch of asafeotida (hing) – optional (omit to make gluten-free or use certified gf asafetida)
10 curry leaves (fresh or frozen)
½ cup finely chopped red onion
2 Tbsp chopped cashews
½ inch ginger minced, 1 tsp grated
½ cup chopped carrots
½ cup peas, fresh or frozen (thawed)
½ to ¾ tsp salt
2 cups water

INSTRUCTIONS
1.Wash the quinoa several times, drain and keep aside.
2.In a medium skillet, add oil and heat at medium. When the oil is hot, add mustard seeds and urad dal and let them sputter or sizzle for 15 seconds.
3.Add chili, asafeotida and curry leaves and cook for half a minute.
4.Add onions and cashews and cook for 4 to 5 minutes or until translucent.
5.Add ginger, carrots, and cook for 2 minutes.
6.Add quinoa and roast for 2 minutes with the veggies.
7.Add salt, water, peas, cover and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low-medium, cover and cook for 15 minutes. Let the quinoa sit covered for 5 minutes. then uncover, fluff and serve. Garnish with cilantro and generous lemon juice. 8.Serve as a side, or as breakfast with hot masala chai.

NOTES
Make this with cooked quinoa:
Use 2.5 cups of cooked quinoa and add to the pan at step 7 with salt, peas and a splash of water. Mix well. Cover and cook for 2 minutes to heat up. Let sit for 5 minutes before serving. Add currants or other dried fruit along with cashews.

So here is a delicious DIY recipe which i think everyone will surely want to try:

MIXED PULSES CURRY / DAL

Ingredients:

2 cups Mixed pulses – white and black chana / chickpeas, moong / whole green gram, rajma / kidney beans, dried chawali /blackeyed beans, white and green peas – soaked overnight. Pressure cook with 1/2tsp of turmeric powder till one whistle goes off and then reduce the flame and cook for another 10 minutes. Pulses should be soft.

To grind:

  • 1 tbsp chopped Onion
  • 1/4 inch Ginger – chopped
  • 1 Garlic – chopped
  • 6Green chili – chopped
  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 2 tblsp Coriander leaves

To cook:

  • 1 ½ medium Onion – sliced
  • 1 medium Tomato – chopped
  • 1 tsp Dhania / Coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp Haldi /Turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp Garam masala powder
  • 1 tsp Lime juice

Directions:

Grind the garlic, ginger, onion, cumin seeds, green chilies and coriander leaves to a paste. Keep aside.
Heat some oil in a pan, and then add the sliced onions. Fry till it is almost golden brown.
Then add the green paste. Fry for another 2 minutes. Now add the tomato and fry till the oil separates.
Add the coriander powder. Fry for another 2 minutes. Now add the cooked pulses and water.
When it comes to a boil add the Garam Masala powder. Boil for another 2 minutes. Pour the lime juice and take off the gas.
Garnish with coriander leaves and some chopped onions.
Serve with rotis
