Learn The Truth About Your (Dangerous) Laundry Detergent

While our typical laundry detergents are making our clothes seem fresh and clean, they may actually be doing much more harm than good. Very few people know just how dangerous regular laundry detergents can be so we thought that it was important for us to tell you! Here are seven reasons why they can be toxic:

  1. The fragrances which seem to smell so nice are actually synthetic and has: formaldehyde which is a chemical compound known to cause cancer in animals, other carcinogens (cancer-causing agents) and phthalates which have shown negative effects on reproductive health and respiratory system.
  2. Most detergents have optical brighteners (additives that add blue light, making whites seem whiter) which stay in the clothes long after washing and can cause skin irritation.
  3. The chemicals have a negative effect on the environment, contributing to water pollution in particular.
  4. Laundry detergent manufacturers don’t have to list all ingredients on packaging, so you have no idea what chemicals they could be adding and whether or not they’re hazardous.
  5. Fabric softeners are designed to stay in the clothes after washing which means continuous contact between chemicals and the skin.
  6. Chlorine bleach (found in most detergents) when going down drain can produce organochlorines which can create problems for reproductive and neurological systems.
  7. Majority of products never been tested so we have no idea if they are actually safe to use or not.

Thanks to http://www.motherearthliving.com for this list.

While we do have to wear clothes, they don’t have to be washed with items that may potentially harm us! It’s time to get rid of the toxic chemicals in your home and purchase our all-natural chlorine-free laundry detergent for regular clothes.

Organic 101: Benefits Of Organic Products

Today we are seeing more and more products with “organic” stickers plastered on them, hearing friends gush about their new organic cosmetics and reading people boast on Facebook about how they’ve switched their diets to only organic and gluten-free food. Yet, amongst this significant increase in popularity for going organic, people are left wondering what it even means. So, let’s break it down with some Organic 101:

What is Organic?

The simple definition of the term is: food and products made without the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, dyes and other artificial chemicals. Not using these artificial products helps to improve the quality of the food produced and decreases the risk of contamination.

Organic farmers often swap out chemical fertilizers with natural ones such as manure and compost and instead of synthetic pesticides and herbicides use more natural methods like using insects and birds, crop rotation, mulching, hand weeding etc.

Not only are plants treated more naturally, but so are the animals and livestock raised for eggs, poultry, meat, and dairy products. They must have access to the outdoors and are not fed any regulating hormones, drugs, antibiotics or genetically modified feed. This organic farming helps to ensure that the food eventually reaching our mouths is more clean and pure, with less chemicals altering its natural state.

“Organic agriculture is a systems approach to production that is working towards environmentally, socially and economically sustainable production.” says the Department for Agriculture and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).

What are the Benefits for Me?

So now that we know what organic means, it’s important to understand to the benefits! Here are some of the top reasons organic food and products are good for your health:

  •   They are easier for the body to break down in comparison to the chemicals and metals found inside the fertilizers used on inorganic products.
  •   They have more vitamins, minerals and antioxidants (substances that help in preventing types of cell damage).
  •   Reduces exposure in your body to the residue from pesticides and chemicals.
  •   They are fresher due to the lack of preservatives.
  •   Taste better because of the care given to the soil and plants!
  •   Food labeled as organic undergoes a certification process so you can be sure no toxic chemicals are sneaking in there.

What are the Benefits for the Environment?

Not only is organic food good for you, but great for the environment too. Here are some of the main reasons why:

  •   Increases biodiversity: fewer chemicals are used that harm bees and other insects.
  •   Improves soil condition: uses manure/compost rather than pesticides which may damage soil.
  •   Helps to preserve natural habitats and local wildlife.
  •   Keeps water clean: stops the polluted runoff that goes into water from farms using with harmful pesticides, fertilizers and toxic animal waste.
  •   Help in fight against global warming: most organically produced food is distributed locally so less energy/carbon dioxide emissions are used in the transportation.

Looking at all the benefits, it’s easy to understand why people may be throwing out their artificial food and beauty products in exchange for organic ones. If you’re looking to make the switch, our website is the perfect place to start with everything from organic soap to organic coconut oil to organic green tea. Not sure where to begin? Skincare Myths You Believed That Are Totally Busted

Skincare Myths You Believed That Are Totally Busted

You have heard or been told a lot of skincare tips over the years. Skincare is important to us.

So, our in house expert is busting some common skincare myths and revealing the truth behind them.

Skincare Myths You Believed That Are Totally Busted

Myth 1 – Lasers can make you look 20 years younger

Truth – There are many different types of lasers being marketed and they all do different things. Some help with sun spots, some help with wrinkles. Some go deep and activate collagen. It’s all marketed so much that people think it can make you a completely different person!

Skincare Myths You Believed That Are Totally Busted

Myth 2 – Expensive skin products work best

Truth – This is so not true! Many mass market products are better than the expensive ones. Most of the active ingredients found in the anti ageing creams are similar whether they are sold by a local brand or an expensive brand
You can usually get something similar for a lot less.

Myth 3 – Its better to get the pus out of a pimple by popping it.

Truth – The truth is even though it feels really good to release the pus, a lot of it goes in deeper. It causes more inflammation that can lead to scarring and spread under the skin. That’s why you will get another one a few days later close to the first one. Its crucial that you do not pick your face. But if you absolutely cannot resist, be sure to do to right. Don’t squeeze and pop the pimple. Instead use a comedone extractor- an inexpensive tool you can purchase at most beauty supply stores. Apply firm pressure with the extractor and then roll it across the pimple to take it out.

Skincare Myths You Believed That Are Totally Busted

Myth 4 – The higher the SPF in a suncreen, the better the protection.

Truth – There are 3 kinds of UV rays – UVA UVB and UVC.

UVA penetreates the skin fairly deeply and intereferes with your pigmentation to produce a tan.
UVB are primarily sunburn rays.
UVC are absorbed by the atmosphere and don’t make it to the ground.
The SPF on a sunsreen refers to the amount of protection the product offers against UVB rays.
Many sunscreen therefore need to offer protection from both UVA and UVB.
Always look for a SPF of atleast 15! Or broad spectrum suncreens that offer protection against both UVA & UVB.

Myth 5 – You do not need sunscreen on a cloudy day or when your wearing makeup with an SPF.

Truth – Even on a cloudy day, UV radiation from the sun reaches the earth’s surface.
so make sure you use sunscreen everyday and reapply it every 3-4 hours as well as after swimming and heavy sweating. Also, don’t fall prey to the myth that your are protected just because you are wearing makeup with SPF.
You would have to put on 14 t 15 times the amount of makeup that a normal person would wear to reach the SPF on the label of the makeup.
Make sure you use sunscreen in addition to your makeup.

Our in house expert is happy to answer any other question you may have on skin care.

You can sent your queries here.

Say No Beauty Products With Chemicals

Say No Beauty Products With Chemicals

In a world ravaged with pollution and environmental factor damaging your skin, it’s hard to stay beautiful, retain clear skin without sans beauty enhancing products

The use of beauty products has come to full circle. In olden days people were using natural beauty products then we shifted to chemicals and now we are heading back to Mother Nature.

Say No Beauty Products With Chemicals

Here is a list of The Dirty Dozen ingredients that should be avoided:

1. Phthalates : ‘Dibutyl Phthalate

What is it? : Phthalates can be easily absorbed by our skin.  It enhances the capacity of other chemicals to cause genetic mutations.

Why is it harmful? : It has been shown to cause developmental defects and is toxic to reproductionand can also harm the unborn and impair fertility.

2. Sulphates or Sodium Laurate(or Lauryl) Sulphate (SLS)

What is it? : Primarily used as a foaming agent or detergent to be found in shampoos, facial cleansers, bubble bath products, household and utensil cleaning detergents.

Why is it harmful? : Depending on the manufacturing process it can work as a possible human carcinogen and can even harm the nervous system.

3. Paraben

What is it? : Primarily used as a preservative, they are used as fragrance ingredients, not listed in your favorite perfume label.  Perfume recipes are considered trade secrets; hence the manufacturers are not obliged to disclose the ingredients. An estimated 75-90% of cosmetics contain this toxin.

Why is it harmful? : Parabens are easily absorbed by our skin. Parabens can mimic estrogen and has been detected in human breast cancer tissues. It is estimated that women are exposed to 50mg of parabens per day.

4. Formaldehyde

What is it? :  These are primarily preservatives commonly found in cosmetics.

Look for: DMDM hydantoin, diazolidinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea, methenamine, quaternium-15, and sodium hydroxymethylglycinate. These ingredients slowly and continuously release small amounts of formaldehyde.

Why is it harmful? : Formaldehyde has a very sharp odor.  It is also blamed for allergic reactions in sensitive people.

5. BHA and BHT

What is it? : BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) and BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) are synthetic antioxidants used as preservatives in lipsticks and moisturizers and are also used as food preservatives.

Why is it harmful? : They can cause allergic reactions, liver, thyroid and kidney problems along with lung function impairment and problems in blood coagulation. Moreover, they mimic estrogen and can have an adverse impact on reproduction.

6. Coal-Tar dyes

What is it? : Coal tar-derived colorants are used extensively in cosmetics. P-phenylenediamine is used frequently hair dyes.  These dyes are generally identified by a five-digit Colour Index (C.I.) number.
Why is it harmful? : Coal tar is a carcinogen and dyes made from it have a high potential for causing cancer. These colours are sometimes contaminated with aluminium substrate which is toxic to the brain.

7. DEA compounds

What is it? : DEA (diethanolamine) and its compounds are used in moisturizers and sunscreens, while cocamide and lauramide DEA are found in soaps, cleansers, and shampoos to create more lather.

Why is it harmful? : These cause mild skin and eye irritation. Exposure to high doses of these chemicals has caused liver cancers and pre-cancerous changes in skin and thyroid in a few cases.

8. Fragrance/Parfum

What is it? : Apart from being used in perfumes and deodorants, they are used in nearly every type of personal-care product. Of the thousands of chemicals used in fragrances, most have not been tested for toxicity, alone or in combination. Over 3000 chemicals are used to manufacture synthetic fragrances.

Why is it harmful? : These are often unlisted ingredients that are irritants and can trigger allergies, migraines, andasthma symptoms and lead to asthma in children.

9. PEG compounds

What is it? : PEGs (polyethylene glycols) are widely used in cosmetics as thickeners, solvents, softeners, and moisture-carriers and hence used for products requiring a cream base and also in laxatives.

Why is it harmful? : Ethylene oxide is a human carcinogen while 1, 4-dioxane – a possible human carcinogen. Ethylene oxide harms the nervous system and causes developmental problems. They are also known to cause skin irritation and systemic toxicity.

10. Petrolatum

What is it? : Mineral oil jelly or petroleum jelly is used as a moisturizer and in hair-shine products.

Why is it harmful? : Petrolatum can be contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Exposure to PAHs is associated with cancer and skin irritation and allergies.

11. Siloxanes

What is it? : Cyclomethicone and ingredients ending in “siloxane” make hair products dry quickly and deodorant creams slide on easily.  They are also used extensively in moisturisers and facial treatments to soften and smoothen and in medical implants.

Why is it harmful? : Cyclotetrasiloxane and Cylcopentasiloxane —D4 and D5 — are endocrine disruptors, interfere with human hormone function and possible reproductive toxicants that may impair human fertility, cause uterine tumours and harm the reproductive and immune systems.

12. Triclosan

What is it? : Triclosan is used mainly in antiperspirants/deodorants, cleansers, and hand sanitizers as a preservative and an anti-bacterial agent. Also used in laundry detergent, facial tissues, and antiseptics for wounds.

Why is it harmful? : It can pass through skin and is suspected of interfering with hormone function (endocrine disruption). Extensive use may contribute to antibiotic-resistant bacteria. It can cause irritation to the skin and eyes.

The Anti-Cancer Diet: Foods to Fight Cancer

To reduce your risk of cancer, look no further than your fridge. One of the easiest things for a person touched by cancer to address is their diet. Our view is that diet is most helpful in fighting cancer.

Many cancer survivors have been fortunate enough to use a combination of natural cancer treatments themselves at home, in conjunction with conventional medical treatments, in order to overcome their disease. This duel approach can help support the entire body and mind in the healing process that can sometimes be long and very difficult. Today, the early combination of chemotherapy and nutrition therapy is able to save the lives of thousands of cancer patients.

Inflammation is the underlying issue that dictates cancerous tumor initiation, progression and growth. Studies suggest that 30 percent to 40 percent of all kinds of cancer can be prevented with a healthy lifestyle and dietary measures! And other sources claim that this number is in fact much higher, with around 75 percent of cancer cases being lifestyle-related.

Practicing strategies that are fully within your own control — including things like eating a healing diet, vegetable juicing, consuming probiotic foods, taking immune-boosting supplements, busting stress and practicing healing prayer — can make you feel more empowered and hopeful when battling a disease, which goes a very long way in the healing process.

Aim for five to nine daily servings of all kinds of fruits and vegetables—especially these six superstars:

  • Broccoli: Helps fight against breast, liver, lung, prostate, skin, stomach, and bladder cancers

  • Berries: Helps fight against colon, esophageal, oral, and skin cancers

  • Tomatoes: Helps fight against endometrial, lung, prostate, and stomach cancers

  • Walnuts: Helps fight against breast and prostate cancers

  • Garlic: Helps fight against breast, colon, esophageal, and stomach cancers

  • Beans: Helps fight against breast and colon cancers

While researchers are still trying to determine which foods have the most cancer- preventing benefits, we do know what not to eat if you want to protect yourself.

What not to eat: Animal fats like Meat, cheese, and butter can be rich in saturated fat, which has been linked to obesity—a big cancer predictor. Opt for leaner protein sources, such as fish, low-fat dairy, and those good-for-you beans.

What not to drink: Excessive alcohol: Stop after one drink! Too much tippling is associated with an increased risk of cancers of the mouth, esophagus, and breast.

An anti-cancer diet is an important strategy you can use to reduce your risk of cancer.  Make room in your diet for these foods & drinks to fight cancer. Shop here for some of the beneficial cancer fighting foods:

SOS Organics Himalayan Village Brown Rice: Known for its powerful detoxifying and anti-cancer benefits

Deccan Organic Turmeric Powder: Curcumin may help prevent cancer

Conscious Food Chick Peas (Kabuli Chana): Good source of insoluble fiber, folate, and vitamin B6

Body Lotions Vs Body Butters

screenshot

Nowadays there are so many different kinds of products available in the market for the skin, there are body lotions, body butters, moisturizers, body salt, etc,etc.. all have different benefits & different uses. They all look so promising that it confuses us what to buy & what not.

So let’s compare between a Body Lotion & Body Butter:

Ever wondered what the difference is between body butter and body lotion? Maybe you’re not sure which one to reach for with your skin type. And with so many DIY recipes and products available, which one do you need?

lotion-1

Body Lotions:-

Body lotions and creams are counted and regarded as cosmetic and beautification products which enhance and improve the skin conditions and texture. These are usually applied by the people who have skin concerns and issues and by those who want to keep their skin healthy and nourished as well.

Body lotions can be effectual and efficient for any skin condition you can imagine. These work well with any sort of blemishes, wrinkles or acne. You can also apply these during winters for a perfect moisturized and balanced skin condition. Body lotions have a wide variety and range for the selection. You can select anyone from the synthetic ones to the natural or organic ones; it totally depends on your mood and preference.

Body Butters:-

Body butter is a skin moisturizer that typically contains cocoa butter, shea butter, coconut oil or another vegetable-based oil. It’s thicker than lotions and is extra effective at rejuvenating dry skin, whether used all over or only on problem patches, such as elbows and knees. The best time to apply body butter is just after your daily shower to lock in moisture and keep your skin hydrated all day

Body butter is type a nourishing moisturizer that provides long-lasting hydration to the skin. Unlike body lotion, body butter has a distinctive whipped texture. If you think body butter is the same as your average lotion, you’re wrong.

Body Butter are further available in different flavors. A few are listed below:

  • Kokum Butter.
  •  Mango Butter.
  • Olive Butter.
  • Hemp Seed Butter.
  • Shea Butter.
  • Almond Butter

Useful Tip

Body butters are particularly valuable in dry winter weather to provide a protective layer against the wind and cold.

The Difference between Body Butter and Body Lotion:

Body lotion and butter work the same way, they hydrate the skin. The difference between the two are the ingredients.

Body lotion contains more water, some are made up of 70% water. While body lotion provides ample moisture, it does so temporarily. This means you have to apply the product several times in order to prevent dryness.

On the other hand, body butter is composed of essential oils and nut butter. The ingredients are humectants, emollient substances that trap and lock in moisture. The product will condition and nourish the skin. The texture itself is much thicker than lotion. When used regularly, body butter will hydrate the skin like nothing else.

A body butter is best used during cooler climates. The thicker, more emollient texture could be too heavy during warm, humid season.

benefits-text

  • Body Lotion Benefits

Lotion is a plentiful commodity found in most homes. Lotions rely upon a combination of oil and water bound together through the use of an emulsifier. Whether it’s a moisturizing lotion to relieve dry skin or a medicated lotion, such as calamine lotion, it tends to go on smoothly, absorb quickly, and leave no greasy residue.

  • Body Butter Benefits

Body butter generally includes three basic ingredients: shea butter, a vegetable oil, and coconut oil or butter. There are different types of body butter as well. You can choose from whipped, waxless and even a bar-type. The whipped butter usually includes beeswax, which makes the formula harder to absorb but longer lasting, while the waxless and bar-type are more easily absorbed into the skin. Body butters are thicker than lotion and tend to leave a film on the surface of the skin.

  • Which to Choose

The fact that most body butters use shea butter, an all-natural, healing vitamin A cream, makes them ideal for skin damaged by dryness, wind or chapping. A body butter will provide superior, longer-lasting emollients, making it the choice when dry skin also needs intense moisture and healing. If added moisture is all that is necessary, a lighter, more easily absorbed lotion would be adequate.

There are a few organic body lotions & body butters available online in India. Choose from the below:
