Green Home Cleaning Tips and Products

Cleaning the floor can be the most woeful of chores—and most of us wouldn’t mind a small miracle to ease the agony. Unfortunately many of the conventional cleaning products that promise an easy and sparkling floor, are terrible for our health and the environment. We can’t provide a fairy godmother here, but we can show you how to clean your floors without compromising your health.
If you use conventional cleaning products on your floor, well, think of it as swishing and swashing potentially toxic chemicals across the largest surface area of your home. Also consider this an Environmental Protection Agency study showing indoor levels of pollutants (like formaldehyde, chloroform, and styrene) ranging from 2 to 50 times higher than outdoor levels—much of it from conventional cleaning supplies. Some floor cleaners include a surprisingly toxic ingredient list—people exposed to the heavy-duty cleaners often experience eye irritation, dizziness, loss of concentration, fatigue, wheezing, coughing, asthma attacks, respiratory infections, and hypersensitivity pneumonitis.

Smart” Floor Maintenance Tips
The key to minimizing the need for cleaning formulas is good regular maintenance. Dirt on the floor can abrade the surface making the floor even harder to clean. Here are some “smart” techniques that reduce the need for cleaning:
• Place doormats at the entrances (called walk-off mats, will reduce not just dirt but lead and pesticides).
• Ask that shoes be removed at the entrance.
• Plan regular sweeping, vacuuming or dust-mopping.

Did You Know..??

Floor cleaners that give you shine also give you off-gassing of petroleum-based polymers. In addition, most of the fragrance that accompanies conventional floor cleaners are either indoor air pollutants on their own, or are inert on their own but mix with ozone to create formaldehyde and other toxic air contaminates.

Ever read the ingredients in regular floor cleaners,  and other floor cleaning products.? Not what I want my little one crawling around to get affected by! The great news is that Natural Organic floor cleaning solutions are incredibly great substitutes to them.

A growing number of commercial non-toxic home cleaning products are also available, as healthier and environmentally responsible alternatives. Your use of these organic floor cleanser helps promote the growth of green businesses which are contributing to a sustainable economy.

How to make ALL-PURPOSE CLEANER at home:

  • 1/4 cup white vinegar
  • 2 Tbsp. baking soda
  • 1/4 gallon (1 liter) hot water
  • A few drops of essential oil (optional)
  • Combine the ingredients, stir, and let cool for a few minutes before pouring into a spray bottle. Tea tree essential oil has antiseptic properties, making it a winner for cleaners. But my favorite aromas come from orange, lemon, and lavender essential oils. Use and enjoy!

What are the Benefits of Green Cleaning?

The benefits associated with green cleaning are numerous and varied. Specifically, green cleaning products have been found not only to be safe for individuals who use them on a daily basis, but also for the environment in which they are often released. In addition, green cleaning products can often be a cost-effective alternative to more expensive, traditional products. Finally, unlike some other products, green cleaning items are often multi-purpose, and can be used for a number of functions around the home or office.

1. Non-toxic cleaners are perfectly safe around children.
It’s a relief that kids can be around, no problem, when you’re cleaning without chemicals. The toddler and preschooler crowd loves to hang around the parents, so it’s perfectly fine for them to follow you and “help” as you scrub the bathroom counters.

2. Non-toxic cleaners keep the air you breathe clean.
Most store-bought cleaners are full of toxic chemicals. After all, why would most of them have so many warning labels about not breathing in the fumes? That can’t be good.air quality inside many homes can be two to five times more polluted than the air just outside our homes. Traditional household cleaners play a huge factor.

3. Non-toxic cleaners are much, much cheaper
Most basic cleaning recipes require the same basic ingredients, and they can be found in just about every grocery store.  It’s even cheaper when you buy the ingredients in bulk.

4. Non-toxic cleaners don’t harm the environment.
Conventional cleaners easily seep into our water, and it’s difficult for many water treatment plants to treat a large volume of these chemicals. Built up over time, and this can affect wildlife and other natural resources. Many cleaners are also petroleum-based, which causes further damages.

5 Essentials this Diwali

diwali must have emailer bannerDiwali is here again! Eyes alight with the joy of sharing and caring, all Indians celebrate this triumph of good over evil – festival with gaiety and an infectious happiness!

With the festival of lights knocking on the door, a majority of us have already stocked up, or have at least decided on, gifting options for our family and friends. Yes, Diwali is not just about sharing the joy and happiness with the ones you care, but also the spreading a general sense of enlightenment and contentment. And it really helps to plan and prepare for such festivities.

We have identified 5 essential products that any household must have before festive tidings come flooding in.

  1. Take for instance, the Aloe Vera Gel, which has an intrinsic property of being anti-septic and heals skin inflammation, infections, allergies, blisters and even insect bites. Besides these, aloe vera gel keeps the skin hydrated and is effective in removing tan too. Being an almost instant remedy for burns, it is quite a handy product during Diwali, especially if you have kids at home.
  2. No Indian festival is complete without prayers being offered to the deity and foreheads being marked with crimson-red kumkum paste. During Diwali, and in puja ceremonies across households, Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped as a symbol of good luck and prosperity. Traditionally KumKum has been observed as a mark of devotion and forms one of the most important ingredients in a puja thali.
  3. When it comes to decking up during Diwali, we Indians do like to leave no stone unturned. Whether it’s ourselves, or our home, we do take our appearance, well-being and our living ambience seriously. It’s only natural that when it’s Diwali, we’d ensure that our Home Sweet Home reflects positivity. How, do you ask? Indie Eco Candles Pink Jasmine is a handcrafted candle which is made with vegetable wax instead of the regular synthetic paraffin wax that is packed with petrochemicals. And who doesn’t like some clean, green and non-toxic fragrance to fill up their living space!  The aroma of essential oils infused into the candles is long-lasting and naturally uplifting. It only gets better with Pink Jasmine in particular as it promotes relaxation, reduces stress, while elevating feelings of happiness, contentment and confidence. Now isn’t that a relief!
  4. There’s more ways one can celebrate the festive spirit! Let us not forget to stock up on the oh-so-important dry fruits. Cashews, to be specific. It’s almost hard to find a home during Diwali which has not yet hoarded up on cashew nuts. And why should we not! Don’t they just taste fabulous? Add to this the peace of mind that comes with knowing that these cashews from Natural Mantra are organic and contain zero cholesterol. And we’re sure when we tell you that these nuts are coated with real, flavourful saffron, you’d find it irresistible!
  5. And finally, how can the spirit of Diwali ever be complete without sharing good wishes. Sharing what we consider important to us with friends, family and others, is the first step towards bridging gaps and narrowing differences. Such is our culture that an unexpected gift, no matter how small, is always received with arms wide open. So, why not make a kind and thoughtful gesture and communicate your wishes with greeting cards? Make no mistake. Not all greeting cards are the same. For instance, Omved Plant card – Prosperity is eco-friendly; has no dyes, additives, or chemicals; and made using 100% recycled ingredients. And to top it off, there’s a printed message on this card which is the Sanskrit bij mantra shreem for ‘prosperity’.

With still a week left to capitalize on, wouldn’t you hurry already? Share your happy thoughts on the same and if perchance there’s something that we’ve missed that you think counts as important as a Diwali essential, leave us a line below. It’s always great to hear the thoughts of kindred spirits, who believe in holistic, healthy living.

Here’s wishing you a safe, prosperous and Happy Diwali!
