Celebrate Womanhood, the Natural Way!!

finer-womanhood

Women of the 21st century are independent, liberated and progressive than women from the previous era. They have been redefining gender roles and claiming more power to themselves in various walks of life. Women are proving that they could be leaders in all aspects, thereby demonstrating their potentials to the fullest. Although, what most of them have been missing in all this progress is a little care towards themselves and their own body. Between hectic work schedules and taking care of yourself, you probably already have plenty of reasons to pamper yourself and unwind.

So today on International Women’s Day, we are going to discuss 7 easy yet blissful ways to make you feel spoiled, overindulged and treated.

  1. Give Yourself a Foot Massage

Reflexology is an ancient alternative therapy believed to help you heal your body and your mind. The underlying methodology is that each area of your foot relates to a specific body part and by massaging your feet, you can positively impact the rest of your body. During the massage, you’ll be able to feel any cricks or burs under the skin. These are the areas you should focus on to improve your health.

And at the very least, a good foot massage will leave you with a pampered smile, because it just plain feels awesome.

  1. Use Essential Oils in the Bath

If you follow a hectic schedule day in and day out, probably you don’t get enough time to relax in the bath. Nothing can beat a long hot bath when it comes to relieving stress. It can also boost your mood, induce sleep, and relax your achy muscles. Bathing with essential oils is one of the most relaxing ways to attend to your ablutions, and is great for your skin.

  1. Detoxify

It is advisable to include a combination of deep cleansing and moisturiseration ration of the skin coupled with massage and heat. Body treatments and scrubs as well as facials rid the skin of impurities by incorporating cleansers, scrubs, and steam to soften the skin. Massage also helps the body release toxins and detoxify. Purifying your body through detox helps boost your immune system and leads to a healthier life.

  1. Care for your Skin

Using organic products will renew your skin to give you a healthy and youthful glow. All you need is a basic cleanser, toner, moisturiser, and broad-spectrum sunscreen to keep your skin in tip-top shape. It also helps maintain the health of your skin to diminish the signs of ageing, and they treat acne and breakouts.

Summer brings refreshing news & natural goodness!

ImageSummer brings refreshing news & natural goodness!

It’s summer time and you’re itching to discard your jeans for shorts! But summer can be harsh on the skin and body so it’s important that you learn to take care of yourself.

Every season needs a particular type of body care. You need to follow health care tips as per the season. During summer there is lot of heat persistent in the atmosphere, thus we need to take body care accordingly.

BODY CARE TIPS FOR SUMMER SEASON –

Skin Care & Clothes

1. The preliminary step for protection from sun’s heat is wear clothes that cover your entire body when you go out in the sun. This protects the body from excessive heat.

2. Wear light color cotton clothes that are loose enough to provide proper aeration. Light color clothes reflect the sun’s rays and reduce their intensity and harm due to the exposure.

3. Wear the cap or tie a scarf whenever you go out in the sun.

Sun Protection

4. You need sun protection to avoid tanned and dry skin. Sun damage can happen whenever you come in contact with harmful UV rays- if you go outside, be sure to use a high SPF sunscreen and reapply it frequently and liberally.

5. Do use safe sunscreen lotions to protect your skin from the ultraviolet rays emitted from sun.

Fluids

6. In summer excessive sweating is common so you are likely to suffer from rashes, rosacea, acne on the face as well as your back, tanning, prickly heat, hair damage, skin infections and sunburn.

Increase the amount of the fluids you drink daily as body needs a lot of fluid during the summer season as the body fluids are lost due to the prominent sweating due to the heat.

Diet

7. Eat a balanced diet as digestion problems are common in the heat. Drink a lot of fresh juices and eat fruit.

Sleep

8. Sleep well to keep your health up to date. About 7 to 8 hours of sleep is necessary during the summer season as it helps all the body processes to take place properly.

Enjoy your summer holidays safely, have fun and be happy & sunny!

How To Take Care Of Your Skin In Winter

As winter approaches, our skin starts feeling dry and uncomfortable. We’ve all experienced it! But the elements don’t have to get the better of your skin. You can still maintain that beautiful, radiant complexion all season long. As the season changes, it’s time to change your skin care regimen and we are here to tell you just how!

1. Sun Protect

Don’t over look the sunscreen in winters. The sun is equally harmful in both the summers and the winters. This is one part of your skin care regimen that must not change.

2. Exfoliate

A good body scrub and facial exfoliant will help remove dead skin cells from your body, leave you feeling fresh and make your skin more receptive to moisturizer! Add this to your cleansing routine once a week.

3. Lukewarm Bath

Avoid long steaming hot showers which are tempting in the winters. They lead to dryness and moisture loss. Bathe with lukewarm water instead and follow up by applying a rich moisturizer or body oil immediately after the bath to retain moisture.

4. Moisturize!

The best time to moisturize is right after you shower because it will help seal in the moisture. Use a natural oil-based moisturizer for your face and a rich body butter for your body. It will help fight the excessive moisture loss which makes your skin flaky. Your elbows, knuckles and knees are dryness prone areas so lather on generously.

5. Happy Feet

For your feet, apply foot oil or cream at night and wear socks. This will ensure the moisturizer fully seeps into your skin, making it soft and well-hydrated by morning.

6. Go Mild

Use moisturizing face wash & mild cleanser. Try not to wash your face more than three times a day. Strong cleansers can strip off your skins natural oil and make it dry.

7. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!

Stays hydrated and drink loads of water. Eat fruits and vegetables that are packed with water, such as apples, celery and cucumbers. Herbal tea is also soothing when it’s really cold. Drink up and don’t let your skin go thirsty.

8. For Soft Lips

Protect your lips with a good-quality lip balm. Don’t lick your lips; this will only chap your lips more. Instead, keep the lip balm in your purse and apply whenever you like! Natural lip balms are non-toxic and do not contain any harmful chemicals, which is important because we always end up licking some, don’t we!

9. No Blow Drying

Give the blow drier a miss this season. Hot air dries the scalp & irritates the skin. Try the tousled look or the wavy style instead. And don’t forget to oil your hair before washing. This will give your hair the added moisture it needs and prevent it from looking rough.

Also, remember to invest in products which suit your skin and simply stay away from products that have sulphates, parabens and phtalates. We recommend using products made from all natural ingredients and which are absolutely chemical-free. Just avoid the dirty dozen when you buy any cosmetics! You are sure to notice a difference in your skin right away! Get set to bring on the new season and keep your skin happy!

Fatal Attraction : Cosmetics & Chemicals

How many of you use a deodorant, lipstick, sunscreen or a baby shampoo?

It’s unlikely your answer is a ‘NO’.  While we have provided a list of the dirty dozen toxic chemicals that you must watch out for in your cosmetics, here’s a super interesting infographic that you cannot, must not and should not miss.

Glance through this infographic for your own sake and for the ones you love, especially if you have little children at home.  A lot of us have ignored this and probably have also said ‘chalta hai’ (it’s okay) or may be ‘kuch nahin hota'(nothing will happen).  Here’s proof that you cannot let this pass anymore and the time is now to say no  to products with toxic chemicals.

Winter Skin Care: Natural Winter Skin Care Tips

Winter is here. Two weeks of ignoring my skin because of a tight work schedule, and I realised something had to be done. Due to low humidity, it’s now become unbearably dry. Had to bid adieu to laziness and say hello to a little pampering to my skin. Needless to say that I ain’t the kind who’d engage in long hours of pampering. Something quick, effective and and needless to say chemical-free.

I have mixed skin which is sensitive. And thin scanty hair to boot. So I always have to remind  myself to check product labels for any toxic chemicals that cause more harm than good in the long run. I personally always try to use as many natural, safe and non-toxic personal care products as possible to avoid harming my already sensitive skin and scalp. While I gathered the various natural options that were available to me to treat dry skin it came to me why not write a post that becomes a ready reference guide to you too.  Within just a few weeks of religious skin care routine I can feel the difference. No kidding!!

Here are a few handy tips for you to ensure that your skin does not suffer in winter and continues to stay soft, supple, healthy and nourished through bleak and harsh weather:

1. Moisturise plenty.  Use a good hand and body lotion to moisturise your hands. Pay special attention to the skin near knuckles and elbows since they darken and turn rough because of the extreme dry air.

USDA certified OG Body Organic Body Butter

Full body butter works well on dry darkened elbows and knees. To regain the natural skin colour before the skin darkened, follow these easy steps:

  • Soak in a bath. Use a body scrub to gently cleanse the dead skin.
  • Use a soft towel to tap the skin dry. Do not wipe the water off. Even if a thin layer of water is left on your skin, it’s alright.
  • Apply body butter and hand lotion except on the elbows and knees.
  • On the elbows and knees, use a skin-lightening oil to ensure that they do not darken further and with constant use, they will gradually regain their original colour.
  • Follow up by applying the body butter or moisturising lotion.
2. Acne is a big problem during winter because of dryness. Start with the dictum: 8 glasses of water a day. Filtered tap water is a non-fancy inexpensive way to maintain your body’s water levels. A couple of extra trips to the washroom are better than muscle cramps, fatigue, dizziness and other symptoms that manifest themselves when you stop drinking water because it’s cold. Energy drinks, fizzy colas and coffee and tea do not count as fluid suppliers.
To replenish skin that is already damaged, at night, wash up with a mild face wash and apply a facial moisturiser before turning in for the night.
You might want to try an organic Aloe Vera Gel which has natural astringent properties and has multi-purpose uses. Use it like an antiseptic, or a recommend it as an after-shave it soothes and calms the skin without leaving it oily.  To me it’s a must have in my purse.
3. The skin on the lips is very thin. Moisture escapes easily from here. Hence, to keep the moisture sealed inside to prevent chapped lips, apply a lip balm. Do this after bathing when there’s a tiny bit of moisture still present in the skin. You can later apply lip colour over it. Reapply the lip balm as often as your lips need it.   4. Hair also tends to suffer during winter. More than pre-monsoon weeks. Remember to use hair oil before washing with a mild shampoo, and a conditioner after washing.

Rustic Art 100% Natural Aloe Shampoo.It really works!

Tip: Rinse in tepid or cool water for the last two minutes (as cold as you can manage on winter mornings). This traps the moisture in the hair ensuring that it does not turn brittle when it dries out. You can use a scarf to protect hair from drying out in the breeze.

Soulflower: Stress relief oils

5. A perfect way to pamper your skin from top to bottom is to soak in a half hour bubble bath with fragrant oils and soft music. The aromatherapy oils work wonders in relaxing you. Alternately, you can also lavish your skin with an oil massage and then have a long soak in de-stressing bath salts.
Remember to invest in a product that suits your skin type and hair type. Not choosing the right product for your skin and hair may worsen its condition.  More importantly understand what is ‘truly natural’ and I can’t emphasize it enough. Simply stay away from products that have sulphates, parabens and phtalates. Incase this is too much to remember, visit NaturalMantra.com to shop for products for your family that are safe, healthy, non-toxic products. Their team screens product ingredients so you don’t have to. You will find a wide range of natural, organic non-toxic, safe oils, lotions, scrubs, and balms that you can choose from to pamper your skin and hair during the aftermath of winter. The Dirty Dozen: Top 12 cosmetic ingredients to avoid

Toxins you put on your body go into your body.

All that we are surrounded by eventually becomes a part of us. Our skin absorbs and internalizes 60% of all products we use on it.  What we put on our skin becomes a part of us. Do you know the exact composition of what goes into your body every single day when you shower, cleanse, moisturize your skin, and apply mascara and lip-gloss?

Here’s a video that will help you understand how toxic our lives have become – our body, our home,  our environment:

It all adds up – little sulphate in your shampoo, a little paraben in your moisturizer and little phthalate in all of them- all add up to build considerable amounts of toxins getting into your blood stream.

We thought we’d equip you with a quick list that you must watch out for, when buying any personal care products.

Here are the dirty dozen toxic cosmetic chemicals that must not  feature under ingredients of any product you buy:

(For your convenience, we have put together this downloadable document for your quick reference:

12 harmful ingredients you must Avoid)

1. Phthalates : ‘Dibutyl Phthalate

 What is it? : Phthalates can be easily absorbed by our skin.  It enhances the capacity of other chemicals to cause genetic mutations.

Why is it harmful? : It has been shown to cause developmental defects and is toxic to reproduction and can also harm the unborn and impair fertility.

2. Sulphates or Sodium Laurate(or Lauryl) Sulphate (SLS)

What is it? : Primarily used as a foaming agent or detergent to be found in shampoos, facial cleansers, bubble bath products, household and utensil cleaning detergents.

Why is it harmful? : Depending on the manufacturing process it can work as a possible human carcinogen and can even harm the nervous system.

3. Paraben

What is it? : Primarily used as a preservative, they are used as fragrance ingredients, not listed in your favorite perfume label.  Perfume recipes are considered trade secrets; hence the manufacturers are not obliged to disclose the ingredients. An estimated 75-90% of cosmetics contain this toxin.

Why is it harmful? : Parabens are easily absorbed by our skin. Parabens can mimic estrogen and has been detected in human breast cancer tissues. It is estimated that women are exposed to 50mg of parabens per day.

4. Formaldehyde

Why is it harmful? : Formaldehyde has a very sharp odor.  It is also blamed for allergic reactions in sensitive people.

Is your lipstick really safe? Read the ingredients to find out yourself.

5. BHA and BHT

8. Fragrance/Parfum

Of the thousands of chemicals used in fragrances, most have not been tested for toxicity, alone or in combination. Over 3000 chemicals are used to manufacture synthetic fragrances.

Why is it harmful? : These are often unlisted ingredients that are irritants and can trigger allergies, migraines, and asthma symptoms and lead to asthma in children.

9. PEG compounds

What is it? : PEGs (polyethylene glycols) are widely used in cosmetics as thickeners, solvents, softeners, and moisture-carriers and hence used for products requiring a cream base and also in laxatives.

Commercially prepared lotions can be loaded with chemicals. Ingredients will tell it all.

11. Siloxanes

What is it? : Cyclomethicone and ingredients ending in “siloxane” make hair products dry quickly and deodorant creams slide on easily.  They are also used extensively in moisturisers and facial treatments to soften and smoothen and in medical implants.

Why is it harmful? : Cyclotetrasiloxane and Cylcopentasiloxane —D4 and D5 — are endocrine disruptors, interfere with human hormone function and possible reproductive toxicants that may impair human fertility, cause uterine tumours and harm the reproductive and immune systems.

12. Triclosan

What is it? : Triclosan is used mainly in antiperspirants/deodorants, cleansers, and hand sanitizers as a preservative and an anti-bacterial agent. Also used in laundry detergent, facial tissues, and antiseptics for wounds.

Why is it harmful? : It can pass through skin and is suspected of interfering with hormone function (endocrine disruption). Extensive use may contribute to antibiotic-resistant bacteria. It can cause irritation to the skin and eyes.

~~~
It’s a simple equation. We live in a world where we have too many choices. We don’t spend enough time consciously arming ourselves with the knowledge of what’s best for us as consumers. We depend on information fed to us by commercials and fancy words companies use.
“I want long shiny luscious wavy locks”;
“I want my split ends to disappear and my scalp to be free from dandruff”
“I want a sun-kissed glow on my skin and smoky eyes for a Saturday evening party
But would I want this at the cost of my health?
Green gifting ideas this Diwali from the Farmer’s Market
Image Courtesy : Google
The farmers’ market last Sunday (Oct 9) was bustling with many new faces and lots of positive energy. We met a new set of enthusiastic sellers with their equally amazing products. With Diwali less than three weeks away, we wanted to make this post more relevant to you. Taking forward from our previous post on ‘Glimpses from the farmers’ market Oct 2′, we’ve attempted to compile this handy-list, on unique eco-friendly gifting options we saw at the farmers’ market. More importantly, the one’s on this list are all safe, healthy, non-toxic options for your family and friends.
Here’s a list of some unique green gifting options that we bring forth in no particular order.
Gifts for young children:
Wood-free pencils are made out of wastes like plastic bags, thermacol plates, denims using lesser amounts of our natural resources
Notebooks out of recycled paper can be unique gifts not only for the older kids but also for moms
Neat lead-free toys and games makes these a gift that is sure to create an impression about you and your choices
1.  KEC Games and ToysColourful, vibrant, thoughtful, earth-friendly toys and art supplies from KEC Games and Toys.
We love them because…
These products are made out of products derived from natural materials such a wood, paper, jute, rope, lac. For example,the pencils are not made of wood but waste material like plastic and more. They have some interesting children’s toys that are non-toxic and hence safe for children. Being a mom of a four year old these work as magnets for me. What truly appealed to me is that they have some really  neat traditional games which encourage experiential learning, encouraging creativity, strategic thinking and skill building. It’s a far better option as compared to television and video games.  The added charm about buying these games is that these also support the work of rural artisans and craftsmen by giving them a sustained source of income.
Gifts for women
2. Young Cosmetics with certified organic ingredients
Natural, safe, chemical-free cosmetics with a wide range of colours to suit the Indian skin tone. The ingredients include (ghee) clarified butter, kokum butter (garcinia indica), honey, beeswax
A long shelf life and yippee cruelty free
Young Cosmetics
We love them because…
Young cosmetics range are 100% chemical-free products. Rest assured, these line of products are devoid of any chemicals such as sulphates(SLS), parabens, petroleum based ingredients or any synthetic preservatives, When I read the ingredients on the pack the Young Mango Butter Moisturizer mentioned certified organic ingredients such as clarified butter, kokum butter, honey, beeswax.  Something interesting that stuck a chord was mango butter which has healing and regenerative properties. The icing on the cake, it also protects your skin from harmful sun damage. What I gather here is that I can simply wear this moisturizer on my skin along with a dash of natural lipstick and head out!
Young cosmetics range of products include lipsticks, lip balms, foundation, moisturizer and body lotion. This time consider a safe, chemical-free gifting option.
3.  Gifts for pregnant women and infants
Great little organic goodies to carry in your purse
USDA certified organic herbal teas from mommy and baby
The USDA certified organic Maternity gift baskets
We love them because…
OG Mama’s website says it well  ‘What goes on, goes in’. What we apply on our skin, matters.  Samskara Wellness has a pretty neat basket of organic goodies to offer.  Because it’s certified organic it makes a great quality gift for moms-to-be . The pregnancy gift basket includes a large Organic Belly Butter (236ml), an Organic Lavender  Gentle soap (236ml), a Organic Lavender  Moisture Oil (236ml), an Organic Pregnancy Tea(from Traditional Medicinals), a Hyacinth picture frame all filled in a flower pot.
I particularly was attracted to the organic caffeine-free herbal teas. They are available for:
  • pregnant women
  • breastfeeding moms
  • women to help promote the health of the female system
  • the health of the urinary tract
I picked up the Organic Cran-Acid teas for my mom. We’ll come back with our review in a few weeks.
Neat set of products worth a try.  You will get addicted to these!
4. Unique memorable gifts for your friends. Home Décor
Visiting cards we fell in love with :).
Bees wax filled in empty coconut shells. How cool is that?
You can definitely find something interesting to gift here
Our Lil BitYou’ll get a drift of their unique products once you see their visiting cards.  I sure haven’t seen something like this, ever since I left my high-profile, stressful advertising job.
We love them because:
The products in the Our Lil Bit  outlet come from 15 NGOs who make hundred’s of eco-friendly products. It’s hard to leave them without buying something.  From pen holders to little containers that can be used to keep jewellery, to beeswax candles, recycled pin boards, natural mosquito repellants, organic herbs and a lot more. You will most certainly find something or the other that you can gift this Diwali.  Certainly give this store a try. Their cause is noble as they work to preserve and sustain planet earth as there is no Planet B. 🙂 (Picked this up from their visiting card)
~~~
