Sweet #DurgaPuja – Festive News for #Diabetics!

Happy Navratri & a Sweet Durga Puja! Stressed about having to resist all the sweets this festive season? Not to worry! Here’s a Sandesh Recipe that will let you enjoy all the festivities without any of the guilt!

Prepared with milk, sugar-substitute and curdled milk, and decorated with pistachios, almonds and saffron strands, this Bengali sweet dish will melt in your mouth. The nuts give the soft mithai a crunchiness and saffron strands give it a unique flavour. You don’t have to worry about your blood sugar levels this Durga Puja!

This delicately flavoured and fragrant sandesh is a healthy way to end your meal without adding any unnecessary calories and fat.


2 cups low fat milk
Half of  a lemon
1/4 cup sugar substitute or Stevia
Grated pistachios, almonds and saffron strands for garnishing


Allow the milk to cool after boiling, add a few drops of lemon to curdle it.
Wrap the resultant curdle in a clean piece of cloth and squeeze tight to allow all the liquid to drain out.
(Some people might prefer to let it drip dry overnight, but that is not really necessary).
After this, take the curdled milk, add the sugar substitute and mix gently.
Transfer to a non-stick pan and cook on a slow flame for 2 to 3 minutes.
Remove from the flame and transfer to a plate, kneading it to remove the lumps.
It should have the consistency of a very soft dough.
The sandesh should be used immediately for making various shapes and garnishes.
Garnish with grated dry fruit, saffron and store refrigerated.
Serve chilled.
